The next generation of sports journalists are being invited to submit entries for an annual writing competition organised by Pitch Magazine.

Pitch is on the hunt for its Young Sports Journalist of 2025, with aspiring journalists aged 14 to 21 who are attending school, college or university encouraged to take part.

A panel of accomplished judges will assess the entries, which must answer one of four topical questions as well as fitting the word count criteria.

Winning entries will be published online and printed in the summer issue of the magazine. A £50 cash prize is also up for grabs, alongside the offer of work experience at Pitch.

The competition is open until 9 April 2025. Winners will be announced in May.

Previous winners, who covered topics from the future of esports to the challenges around the inclusion of trans athletes at the Olympics, were Sam Flaherty (age bracket 20-21); Jake Woolley (18-19); Sophia Comer (16-17); and Harry Ainsworth (14-15).

The four topics for the 2025 competition are:

  • Is fan ownership of sports teams a good idea? (20-21)
  • Should junk food companies be allowed to sponsor sport? (18-19)
  • Should the Olympics introduce prize money? (16-17)
  • Is darts a game or a sport? (14-15)
