Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan – who will be BBC Match of the Day anchors from next season – all competing for Presenter crown at #SJA2024; 19 more Broadcast section category shortlists announced; book tickets now for Awards Night in London on Monday 24 March…

Mark Chapman has the chance to win the SJA Presenter of the Year Award for a third consecutive year, but he faces a challenge from his BBC Match of the Day colleagues.

Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan, who will share the main MOTD role with Chapman from next season, are also shortlisted in the Presenter category at the SJA British Sports Journalism Awards 2024.
Logan was runner-up last year to her Sports Agents podcast co-host Chapman, who also claimed the SJA Presenter prize in 2017.
BBC Sport’s Clare Balding is another former winner, having taken the trophy after London 2012, while Adrian Durham and Ade Oladipo retain their shortlist spots from last year. Orla Chennaoui completes the line-up.
Presenter is one of 20 category shortlists announced in the Broadcast section ahead of Awards Night in London on March 24.

Reflecting on the shortlists as a whole, chair of judges Andrew Spence said: “The level and quality of entries remain exceptional this year, as it does every year, and it’s great to see that reflected in our new categories, such as Content Creator and YouTube Show.
“This highlights the strong state of both the sports journalism industry and the SJA.”
Breaking News Coverage, Content Creator, and Content Creator Exclusive are all new awards, while a trio of YouTube trophies are up for grabs – Channel, Newcomer, and Show.
The Overlap won the SJA’s last YouTube category in 2021, and appears in the Channel category this year alongside AFTV, founded by presenter Robbie Lyle, which was also shortlisted three years ago. Both have entries in contention for the Content Creator Exclusive award as well.
The YT Newcomer and Show lists are also packed with talent, ranging from Cristiano Ronaldo’s “UR” project to the Goal Diggers UK football podcast.
Meanwhile, Mark Chapman is not the only one chasing three in a row. The Athletic bids for the same in Audio Documentary, while it’s a familiar fight between holders talkSPORT and the BBC in Audio Live Event Coverage.
White & Jordan will aim to keep their Audio Show crown but face competition from station stablemates GameDay and a quartet of BBC productions.
In Broadcast Journalist, the BBC’s Dan Roan is the only returning winner and is alongside three others who were also shortlisted 12 months ago – Amanda Davies, Patrick Davison, and Rob Harris. Craig Slater and first-time shortlistee Alex Aljoe are contenders here too.
Alistair Bruce-Ball, Chris Jones and Gigi Salmon make their debuts in the Commentator category, which includes previous winners John Murray and Peter Drury; the Pundit winner from the 2022 Awards, Ally McCoist; and BBC Sport’s Andrew Cotter, who has been shortlisted twice before.
Another talented bunch of young broadcasters are split into ‘On Air’ and ‘Off Air’ categories. talkSPORT’s Olly Clink was in the latter pool four years ago but now moves in front of the mic, as does Mail Sport duo Aadam Patel – also shortlisted in ‘Ones to Watch – Writing’ – and Charlotte Daly, who won an SJA Social Media Journalist Award last year.

Meanwhile, Global’s Sophie Penney is shortlisted for a second consecutive year in ‘Off Air’. She works on The Sports Agents, which is in the running for Podcast. Entries produced by the BBC have taken gold medals in that category for the last two years, and they have three on the shortlist this time.
Ian Wright is the reigning Pundit of the Year and is one of 10 experts who SJA members will deliberate over in their annual vote. He’s up against another former winner in McCoist, while Jamie Carragher, Karen Carney, Nasser Hussain and Roy Keane are all shortlisted again.
Sports Content Organisation enters its third year with BBC Sport, Guardian Sport, Mail Sport, Telegraph Sport and The Athletic all vying to take the mantle over from two-time winners Sky Sports.
In 2022, BBC Breakfast won the TV Documentary Award with ‘Rob Burrow: Living With MND’. This year, they bring us ‘There’s Only One Rob Burrow’ while another much-missed sporting figure is also remembered in this category in the shape of ‘Sven’, produced by Whisper, while there are four more fantastic docs listed.
ITV Sport’s World Cup football feasts have won TV Live Event Coverage in each of the last two years. This time, their hopes rest with the Cheltenham Festival. Sky Sports will want their England Test coverage to follow on from four previous cricket-related wins in this category.
Finally, Monday Night Football are the holders of the TV Show Award and could snap up the silverware once more on a shortlist of six.
Join us on Monday 24 March, when the awards will be handed out at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge. Tickets and tables are available to purchase now.
